Explaining Density Flashcards
What is Density? name its SI Unit and formula.
Density can be defined as the amount of mass per unit volume.
Formula - Mass/Volume
SI unit - kg/m3
other units - g/cc, g/m3, etc.
What is direct proportionality?
When one variable increases, the other one also increases, with one remaining constant.
For example D and M if V remains constant (D = M/V)
What is inverse proportionality?
When one variable increases, the other one decreases.
For example D and V (D = M/V)
What is the water displacement method? Why do we use it?
The water displacement method is a method we use to measure the volume of an irregular object, as we cannot determine the length and breadth of an irregular object.
Explain the water displacement method.
- Measure the mass of the object
- Pour enough water in a measuring cylinder to submerge the rock, and measure this volume as V1
- tie the rock to a string and submerge it into the cylinder, carefully to ensure no spilling. Measure the new volume as V2
- Subtract V1 from V2. The new volume is the volume of the object.
