Difference Between Temperature and Heat Flashcards
1
Q
What is heat?
A
- It is a form of energy (thermal energy)
- Thermal energy refers to the total KE of moving particles of matter
2
Q
What is temperature?
A
- It is not for of energy. It is the thermal state of a physical body
- Temperature refers to the average KE of moving particles of matter
3
Q
What is the formula for KE?
A
KE = 1/2mv2
4
Q
How does the amount of kinetic energy affect the temperature? How is thermal energy measured?
A
- The quicker the object = more KE = higher temp
- The slower the object = less KE = lower temp
- We use a thermometer to measure temp. (Some thermometers use liquids which expand and contract based on the temp.)
5
Q
Do all objects containing mass have kinetic energy?
A
- Anything moving has kinetic energy, with the faster the speed, the more the KE.
- Thermal energy = Total KE
- All particles of matter are in constant motion, thus having KE hence even cold matter has thermal energy
- Thermal energy takes into account the mass of an object
