Q

What is temperature?

A
  1. It is not for of energy. It is the thermal state of a physical body
  2. Temperature refers to the average KE of moving particles of matter

Q

How does the amount of kinetic energy affect the temperature? How is thermal energy measured?

A
  1. The quicker the object = more KE = higher temp
  2. The slower the object = less KE = lower temp
  3. We use a thermometer to measure temp. (Some thermometers use liquids which expand and contract based on the temp.)

Q

Do all objects containing mass have kinetic energy?

A
  1. Anything moving has kinetic energy, with the faster the speed, the more the KE.
  2. Thermal energy = Total KE
  3. All particles of matter are in constant motion, thus having KE hence even cold matter has thermal energy
  4. Thermal energy takes into account the mass of an object
