Experiments Flashcards
Explanatory Variable:
The variable that you are in control of.
Response Variable:
The variable you measure - it changes as a result of changing the explanatory variable.
Extraneous Variable:
Any other variables (not explanatory or response) that could affect the experiment.
What is a laboratory experiment:
An experiment carried out where all extraneous variables are controlled.
What is a field experiment:
An experiment carried out in the natural environment (real life). The scientist has less control over extraneous variables.
What is a natural experiment:
The explanatory variables are not changes or are very difficult to control.
What are matched pairs:
Members of the population are paired up based upon height, weight etc.
One member becomes part of the control group and one the experimental group.
What are control groups:
The control group is used a reference to compare the effects of the experiment on. They may be given a placebo if it fits the experiment as all extraneous variables are meant to be kept constant across both groups.
What are before-and-after tests:
An experiment which tests the same group of people pre and post the experiment to see the effect on a group of people.
