Experiments Flashcards
Lab, field and comparative
what are experiments
a scientific method in which the researcher closely controls all the different variables to discover the effect the changing one has
what is the experimental group
exposed to the independent variable that the researcher thinks will have an effect
what is a control group
the group not exposed to the independent variable, their conditions are kept constant
what is a laboratory experiment
takes place in a highly controlled environment to try and control all variables besides the one being measured
what is the example of a laboratory experiment
Milgram
summarise Milgram as an example of laboratory experiment
hypothesis- how much orders you will follow from authority figures even if contrast personal morals
lab experiment - as everything possible is being controlled except tested variables - stict and structured
what is a field experiment
takes place in subjects natural surroundings rather than artificial environment
people involved usually dont know an experiment is taking place
what is an example of a field experiment
Rosenthall and jacobson
summarise Rosenthall and jacobsons experiment as a field experiment
hypothesis- the way teachers expectations effected childrens outcomes
field- children were unaware of the experiment and were in usual classroom, slight less control over variables
what is a comparative experiment
takes place in sociologists mind, not on real people
cause-and-effect relationship is investigated by comparing two alike group to see if the variable has any effect
what is an example of comparative experiment
Durkeim
summarise Durkeims comparative experiment
hypothesis - low levels of social integration causes high suicide rates
used official statistics on suicide to compare between protestants and catholics
