Experimental Science Flashcards
What is the scientific method?
- Identify an issue or problem to investigate.
- Develop the research question or hypothesis.
- Choose the experimental design and research method.
- Collect data.
- Analyse the results.
- Draw a conclusion.
- Communicate the findings.
How is a testable question different to a general interest science question?
- Testable Questions are always about changing something to see what the effect is on another thing.
- Testable Questions find out how things change over time or in different locations.
What is an independent variable?
The variable intentionally manipulated or changed.
What is a dependent variable?
The variable that needs to be observed or measured to see how it changes.
What is a controlled variable?
The other potential variables that needs to be prevented from changing.
What is an extraneous variable?
Any variable that is not controlled.
What is a hypothesis?
A scientific hypothesis may be described as an “educated guess” because it is based on prior knowledge and observation.
What is a experimental group?
The sample exposed to the independent variable.
What is a controlled group?
The sample exposed to all conditions or variables except the independent variable.
