Experimental designs Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 3 experimental designs?
A
- Matched pairs.
- Repeated measures.
- Independent groups.
2
Q
Define the Repeated measures design
A
- Where the same ppts are allocated to all groups (take part in all conditions) of an experiment.
3
Q
Advantage of the Repeated measures design….
A
- Results are not subject to ppt variables (individual differences)= more confidence in DV changes being solely due to manipulating the IV.
4
Q
Disadvantage of the Repeated measures design….
A
- Risk of order effects (practice/ fatigue effects).
- This risk can be reduced by counterbalancing (A B/ B A).
5
Q
Define Independent groups design
A
- Where different ppts take part in each experimental condition (they will be allocated randomly).
6
Q
Advantage of Independent groups design….
A
- Data collection will be less time consuming if all conditions of the experiment can be conducted simultaneously.
7
Q
Disadvantage of Independent groups design….
A
- Different ppts need to be recruited for each condition, which can be difficult + expensive.
8
Q
Define Matched pairs design
A
- Where ppts only take part in one experimental condition, but they are recruited specifically to be similar in relevant characteristics (e.g. intelligence, gender, age) to “matched ppts” in the other condition (s).
9
Q
Advantage of the Matched pairs design….
A
- The tailored-ppt matching process reduces the risk of ppt variables (individual differences) from affecting results between conditions.
10
Q
Disadvantage of the matched pairs design….
A
- Matching is a more complex process, and it will always be very difficult to match ppts identically.
