Experimental Design Str/Wea Flashcards
What are the three experimental designs
.Repeated measures
.Independent groups
.Matched pairs
Strengths of repeated measures.
. It’s convenient
. You don’t need to account for individual differences
Weaknesses of repeated measures.
. Order effects
such as Demand characteristics, boredom and tiredness
How do you mitigate order effects?
Counterbalencing, by which multiple groups are made so that no group will have to do the same variable more than once.
Strengths of independent groups.
. No order effects will arise
. Less demand characteristics than the other two designs
Weakness of independent groups.
. You must acknowledge the individual differences between participants when comparing
Strengths of matched pairs
. Allows for a comparison to be made between the results of the two participants matched, perhaps one is in a control group
. Reduces demand characteristics
. Representative
Weaknesses of matched pairs
. Not every characteristic can be represented
. Not every participant might be able to be appropriately matched based on a characteristic.
