Experimental design (Independent, RM, Matched) Flashcards
independent groups design
different participants are used in each condition
repeated measures
the same participants are used in each condition
matched pairs
different participants are used in each condition but participants are matched on variables deemed relevant to the experiment e.g., according to an ability or age etc.
independent groups strengths and limitations
strengths:
*Reduces order effects
*Reduces demand characteristics
limitations:
*Introduces participant variables (overcome with random allocation)
repeated measures strengths and limitations
strengths:
*Eliminates Participants Variables
limitations:
*Order effects
(overcome with counterbalancing)
*Increases Demand Characteristics
matched pairs strengths and limitations
strengths:
*Balances out the weaknesses of independent groups and repeated measures
limitations:
*Can be practically difficult to complete and has time and cost implications
