Experimental Design Flashcards
Single Case Designs
When the treatment effect is so large that it can be seen with the naked eye, and in a single-subject
Often used to evaluate effectiveness of interventions
Measurement-Intervention-Measurement
Quasi-Experimental
A design which doesn’t meet all criteria for a controlled experiment (eg, one group, pre test, post test)
Between Subjects
Use separate groups of participants for each of the different conditions in the experiment. Each participant is tested once only. Independent Measures
Within Subjects
each participant is exposed to all the experimental conditions. Each participant is tested as often as there are conditions. Repeated Measures
Random Assignment
very important in between subjects that participants are placed randomly into conditions
Counterbalancing
important in within subjects, condition order is different in different subjects
Advantages of Within Subjects Design
Economical and tend to have smaller measurement errors
Disadvantages of Within Subjects Design
Effects that are possible from counterbalancing, effects from participating in another condition
