Experimental design Flashcards
Independent groups strength
Order effects are reduced because they only do it once.
Demand characteristics so they are less likely to guess the aim of the study or be prepared for it
Independent groups weakness
Participants extraneous variable (how they grew up so you can’t control it)
Less economical – need more participants.
Independent groups solution
random allocation (eg picking names out of hat, number generator)
strength of repeated measure
Extraneous variables are controlled for (age, tiredness, gender ..)
Less participants needed.
limitation of repeated measure
Order effect (practice effect or fatigue effect) eg. Get better the second time.
Demand characteristics – participants know what they are being tested so they can change their behavior.
solution of repeated measure
Counterbalance (Reverse the order -ABBA)
strength of matched pairs
Reducing/minimizing order effect, demand characteristic, extraneous variables
weakness of matched pairs
time consuming and less economical
