What is a case study?
Detailed study of an individual or a small group of people
What kind of data is collected most often?
Qualitative data – test could produce quantitative data
What methods are used within a case study?
qualitative data using methods such as interviews, observations, and analysis of primary and secondary sources
What is triangulation?
Using more than one method to check the validity of the findings

He was born male but suffered damage to his penis
John money saw him as a subject and test to research into sex reassignment which is ethically wrong
what happened to David reimer afterwards?
He was never told that he was biologically male , when he found out he rejected his female identity and suffered from depression
He committed suicide at the age of 38
How can case studies be so powerful?
One single case study can refute a whole story
What is the story of HM?
HM had anterograde amnesia - that is, he could not transfer new information to long-term memory
What is a longitudinal study?
They follow individual or group over an extended period of time

Allow to look at changes over time

Participants may drop out , which can lead to a small sample size
What are the strengths of case studies?
High level of validity -> triangulation

What are the limitations of case studies?
