Experimental design Flashcards
RM Design
Same participants, different conditions
What data does RM produce?
Related
Strengths of RM:
Need 1/2 participants
No participant variables
Weaknesses of RM
More likely to be effected by demand characteristics (can figure out aim)
Order effects = fatigue
How to reduce the effects of order effects?
Counter balancing (ABBA)
Independent groups design
Different participants per condition
What data does IG produce?
Unrelated data
How are IG allocated into groups?
Randomly E.G names in a hat
Strengths of IG:
Less likely to be influenced by demand characteristics.
No order effects.
Weaknesses of IG:
Need 2x participants
Participant variables = EV
Matched Pairs (MP)
Different participants in different conditions (randomly assigned)
Assessed / ranked on a characteristic
Paired with similarity (1st + 1st of each condition)
What data does MP produce?
Related data
Strengths of MP:
Reduced participant variables - matched on relevant characteristics
No order effects
Weaknesses of MP:
Takes longer to set up
2x of participants
