EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN Flashcards
What is independent group design?
Different participants in both conditions (control and experiment group)
Strenghths of independent group design
No oder effects because participanys are involved in One condition so the sont become aware of the aim
Use same materials dor all participants
Its time efficient because both groups are tested at the same time
Weaknesses of independent group design?
Lack of control over participant variables
More participants are required
What is Repeated measures design?
Same participants in both conditions
Strengths of Repeated measures design?
Control over participants variables
Less participants required thus its time efficient
Weaknesses of repeated measures design?
Not valid because it’s affected by Order effects, practice effects, boredom effects
Cant use same materials
What is matched pairs design?
Participants are matched on variables the one is places in conrol group and the the other in experimental group
What does randomisation do to an experiment?
•Removes researcher bias
•Removes participant variables
•Improves validity
Strengths of matched pairs design?
Attempts to remove participants variables (similar parts)
No oder effects
Use same materials
Weaknesses of matched pairs design?
Time consuming because of too many participants
Matching is difficult because we still have some partcipant variables.
More participants needed.
What are some of the ways you can practice randomisation?
•Picking names out of a hat
•Flipping a coin
•Using a computer generator
What is one way of dealing with order effects?
Counterbalancing
