Experiment Vocab Flashcards
Adjective
researchers control variables to establish cause and effect. Disadvantages: difficult to generalize
Independent variable
Manipulated by the researcher
Experimental Group
received the treatment
Control Group
placebo + baseline
Placebo Effect
show behaviors associated with the exp. group when having received placebo (treatment with no active properties)
Double-Blind
Exp. where neither participant or experimenter are aware of which condition people are assigned to
Dependent Variable
measured variable is dependent on the independent variable
Operational Variable
clear, precise, quantifiable definition of your variables- allows replication
Confound
error/ flaw in study
Random Assignment
assigns people to either group at random- minimizes bias, increases chance of equal participation
Random Sample
method of choosing participants- minimizes bias
Validity
accurate results
Reliability
Same result every time
Naturalistic observation
real world validity is when you observe people in their own setting. Disadvantage: no cause and effect
Correlation
identify relationship between two variables (positive or negative). Disadvantage: no cause and effect as well no equal causation)
Positive Correlation
Variables vary in the same direction
Negative Correlation
Variables vary in the opposite direction. The stronger the # the stronger the relationship.
Case Study
Studies ONE person (usually in great detail- lots of info.
Descriptive STATS
shape of the data
Measures of Central Tendency
Mean: average
Median: middle #
Mode: occurs most often
