experiment types Flashcards
lab experiment features
IV manipulated, artificial setting
lab experiment strengths
control over extraneous variables (IV is affecting DV) increases internal validity. replicability, high degree of control and external reliability
lab experiment limitations
demand characteristics and investigator effects, participants can guess- decreases internal validity. low ecological validity- not like real world
field experiment features
IV manipulated, natural setting
field experiment strengths
high ecological validity- like real world. reduction of demand characteristics- unaware they’re in an experiment
field experiment limitations
low control over extraneous variables- can’t be confident IV is affecting DV. difficult to replicate- hard to test reliability. unethical- no informed consent
natural experiment features
IV naturally occurring, natural setting
natural experiment strengths
high ecological validity- like real world. reduction of demand characteristics- gonna be naturally behaved. ethical method for socially sensitive research- unethical to do in a lab
natural experiment limitations
low control over extraneous variables- IV and DV are not manipulated. difficult to replicate- difficult to test external reliability
quasi experiment features
IV naturally occurring, artificial setting
quasi experiment strengths
control over extraneous variables- controlled IV and DV. replicability- high external validity
quasi experiment limitations
potentially reduced ecological validity- could be less realistic. less control of extraneous variables- can’t be certain IV is affecting DV
