Experiment 1 Flashcards
Combination Reactions
Involves two or more elements or molecules coming together to produce a new molecule.
Decomposition Reactions
When a molecule is broken down to form smaller molecules or elements. Often initiated by heat or light.
Displacement Reactions
Involve an exchange of components between molecules or atoms.
Single Displacement
Involves the exchange of one component.
Double Displacement
Exchanges two components.
Neutralization
When an acid and a base react to form a salt and water.
% Yield
(Actual Yield/Theoretical Yield) x 100%
% Atom Economy
(Molar Mass of Desired Product/Molar Masses of All Reactants) x 100%
Reaction 1
Cu (s) —> Cu(NO3)2 (aq). Add 15.8 M HNO3 (aq). End solution is blue.
Reaction 2
Cu(NO3)2 (aq) —> Cu(OH)2 (aq). Add DI H2O and NaOH (aq). End solution is opaque, teal colour mixture.
Reaction 3
Cu(OH)2 (aq) —> CuO (s). Heat mixture until black. Vacuum filter.
Gelatinous
Thick.
Bumping
Bubbling and boiling.
Coagulate
To thicken.
Filtrate
The liquid that is filtered off (the liquid in the flask).
