what happened when johnston became president?
allowed the southern states to rejoin the union. no states tried to enslave black americans. made laws called the black codes. more sinister forms of control emerged the kkk a violent racist group was threatening and murdering african americans at will

what were the black codes?
limited the rights of black americans, black americans couldnt own land, couldnt marry whites, couldnt own any weapons

what happened because of johnstons actions?
not everyone agreed with them many radicals though that the south had given up their right to rule themselves and should be ruled by congress. they tried to undo johnstons actions

what was the freedmans bureau?
took land from ex slave owners and gave it to ex slaves also helped with education and healthcare but had little land to give black familes

what was the civil rights bill?
made it a federal (national) crime punishable by fines and imprisonment to deprive a person of his or her civil rights

political or social freedoms of equality this meant all americans regardless of race should have rights

all people born in the us are citizens of the state they live in regardless of their race (becomes law in 1868)

in washington dc this paved the way for other southern states

what were the 3 reconstruction acts passed by congress?
- removed all state governments in the confederate states they were divided into 5 military districts that would be controlled by union generals
- anyone who fought against the north/union in the civil war was banned from voting
- army officers were required to make sure voters were registered and black rights were protected
- confederate states had to allow blacks to vote and accept the 13th and 14th amendment before they were allowed to run themselves

what happened when 7 states rejoin the union?
7 states had met the standard set so they were allowed back in the usa. the 3 remaining states were not far behind by 1870 2000 blacks had been elected to political posts

andrew johnston was voted out of office, he was replaced by ex-union army general ulysses s grant

all male us cititzens regardless of race had the right to vote african americans felt that everything was going their way

what was the southern resistance?
many southerners were furious about the govs interference in state gov and felt reconstruction was being exploited by scallywags those that sympathised with northern views and carpetbaggers those who had moved south to make money from buying ex plantation lands and selling it for a profit. most black families were sharecroppers. black cititzens in the south were being increasingly targeted by extreme groups like the kkk and the white leauge
what were sharecroppers?
living on land owned by whites and gviving them 2/3rds of their crops as rent

lack of funds which cut off the support for ex slaves- reconstruction slowed down by 1870 many key republicans had died

what is the 1873 supreme court rulling and the black codes?
many states began reintroducing segregation, seperate parks, schools, restaurants and other amentities.

democrats won control of congress meaning they could now make laws

what is the 1875 supreme court rulling?
the supreme court decided that it was up to the states whether they allowed black politicians or not. soon black polititcians who were forced out of offoce and replaced by ex confederate officers

what happened when union troops left the south?
people were fed up of the decade old struggle of the civil war and turning their attention to the expansion west in 1877 the remaining soldiers stationed in the south had been withdrawed. black citizens had been left to fend for themselves
