slaveholders were getting worried they were losing their influence (slaves only counted as 3/5th of a person) and therefore the south was losing power. pro-slavery southern politician Henry Clay suggested a compromise: California should enter a free state, territories gained from Mexico should make their own decision on slavery, all states should accept a new Fugitive Slave Act agreeing to return escaped slaves to their holders

A

it was passed in 1854, it overturned the Missouri Compromise, which said Kansas and Nebraska were not allowed to be slave states but this act overturned this and allowed them to decide whether they wanted slavery though a popular vote

A

political violence in the new state of Kansas broke out between those who were pro and anti slavery. people were trying to win whether or not there should be slavery. 200 people were killed

A

the newspapers stirred the north and south into a frenzy in november 1860 just days after Lincons victory south carolina voted 169 to 0 to succed the union. they stated the president no longer represented their intrests. during the winter of 1860-1, 6 other states left the union and joined south carolina to form a new country called the confederacy

what happened during the fort sumpter attack april 1861?

A

lincoln made a speech in march stating it was illegal for the south to leave the union. all government buildings and army forces were still property of the usa. lincoln was forcing the confederacy to make the first agressive move. on april 12th, confederates open fire on union soldiers in fort sumter a gun battery at charleston harbour in southern Carolina. three days later, lincoln asked royal us troops to stop the rebellion and bring the confederacy back into the us. the us was at war with itself
