Expansion And Contraction Of Piping Flashcards
What is axial movement?
Axial movement is where all motion is in a straight line along the longitudinal access of the pipe. This type of motion is sometimes called linear travel.
What is lateral offset?
Lateral offset is a type of movement, where, on a flanged pipe, two flanges remain parallel, and the same distance apart. It is also called parallel offset or transverse motion.
What is angular rotation?
Angular rotation is a type of movement, where, on a flanged pipe for example, the centres of two flanges remain the same distance from a pivot point located halfway between them when they are actually aligned radial and rotational motion, or other names for this type of movement
What is torque?
Torque is created by forces acting on lever arms, formed by tee’s or elbows, installed in a system.
When would an offset expansion loop be used versus an equal spread expansion loop?
This type of loop is used in horizontal pipe racks where the loop must be raised to clear adjacent piping.
What can be caused between the pieces of a slip or sleeve type expansion joint?
A small water pocket can be formed between the packing an end of the hub, especially when installed in the horizontal position.
What governs the amount of corrugations in a Bellows type expansion joint?
The amount of expansion to be absorbed.
What is the purpose of an equalizing expansion joint?
The rings are designed to reinforce the corrugations against internal pressure and equalize the flexing and compression between the adjacent corrugations.
What is the purpose of a universal expansion joint?
A universal expansion joint is one containing two Bellows, joined by a common connecter for the purpose of absorbing any combination of the three basic movements, such as axial lateral, and angular.
