Why is ENBS important?
- Most babies with metabolic disorder look “normal” at birth
- By doing ENBS, metabolic disorders may be detected before clinical signs & symptoms are present
- early treatment can then be given to prevent consequences of untreated conditions
When is ENBS done?
Done immediately after 24 hrs from birth
How is ENBS done?
- Few drops of blood are taken from the baby’s heel,
- Blotted on a special absorbent filter card & then sent to newborn screening center
Who can collect ENBS sample?
- Physician
- Nurse
- Medical Technologist
- Trained Midwife
Where is ENBS available?
- Hospitals

How much does ENBS cost?
P1750 and is included in the newborn care package for PhilHealth members

7-14 working days
What does a negative ENBS result mean?
Normal
What happens if ENBS results come back positive?
Newborn must be brought back to his/her health practitionat for further testing.
What happes to the dried blood sample after screening?
- After testing, it is stored in a secure locked area.
- Stored sample is retained to allow for normal quality assurance & may be used for ethics commitee approved researches for the benefit of the general public.
