Flea tx in exotics

A
  • Occasionally seen in rabbits and less commonly in ferrets
  • Tx: Imidaclopride (sometimes combined with other molecules –e.g. Moxidectin)
  • DO NOT USE LUFENURON in rabbits or rodents as TOXIC

  • Common in rabbits mostly during summer months
  • Tx: Cyromazine (Rearguard®)
    o Licensed in rabbits

A
  • Occasionally seen in large groups of rodents
  • Tx: Ivermectin and similar
  • Some circumstances, esp large group animals need to discusss preventative ivermectin

  • Occasionally seen in some birds kept in groups (e.g. pigeon lofts)
  • Permethrin powder/sprays to prevent and manage

Quarantine guidelines

A

o Ideally 2 months quarantine
o Separate facilities and objects
o 2x faecal testing (start and end of quarantine)
o Species specific disease testing
