exocrine and endocrine glands Flashcards
what are glands and what are the two types?
epithelial cells that produce secretions, exocrine and endocrine
what is an endocrine gland?
a gland that produces secretions which are released into surrounding interstitual fluid then the bloodstream
give 2 examples of endocrine glands
thyroid and pituitary
state the function of the thyroid gland and the cells which are found in it
- follicular cells secrete T3 and T4 (thyroxine)
- parafollicular (C cells) cells secrete calcitonin
what is an exocrine gland?
a gland by which its secretions are released through ducts that open onto the epithelial surface
state the functional classifications of exocrine glands
unicelluar, multicellular (secretory sheet, pocket of glamd cells)
describe the 3 methods of secretion by exocrine glands
. merocrine - vesicles containing secretory products release contents into duct
. apocrine - secretory product stored in cell, piched off portion of cell in secretion
. holocrine - cell shed into duct, dying cell releases secretory product
what is the clinical name for dry mouth
xerostomia
