Existence Of God Flashcards
Describe what the cosmological argument says about the existence of God (4)
The cosmological argument was created by Thomas Aquinas to prove God exists and created the world.
It starts by saying everything that exists has been caused by something else , in other words everything is the effect of a cause.
He then questions whether there is a end or beginning to this chain or if it’s an infinite regress.
In order to end this infinite regress which is seen as a conceptual monstrosity there must be a first cause . This would be an inca used cause. If it had been caused by anything else then it would not be a first cause since there would be another cause before it.
Therefore in order to be an uncaused cause , the cause must be an omnipotent omnipresent and omniscient being. This means that the only possible being to be this uncaused cause is God. This means he is the ultimate cause of the existence of everything that exists
