Q

Why are there different beliefs about God’s relationship with humanity and the world?

A

-IF GOD IS ATEMPORAL, he has a plan for everyone, therefore peoples prayers will not make a difference - God not interacting with humanity
-RCC - Priests called into ministry BY GOD, when priest is ordained he is acting in the power of Christ, INITMATE RELATIONSHIP
-Protestants - no mediator required between believers and God, Jesus enabled all people to pray directly to him

Q

How is God’s goodness revealed?

four (long) points here

A
  • CREATION- describes his creation as “good”, everything he provide sustains the world
  • (provision of) LAWS- God wants his people to act in morally good ways, God’s rules are the best way of life because he is good, God allows free will and doesn’t force goodness
  • JUDGEMENT- God knows and sees everything, ensures fair judgement after death, reflects goodness
  • SALVATION- offers humans forgiveness through Jesus’ resurrection, ultimate sacrafice, able to spend eternity with God if they repent and have faith

Q

What is the DESIGN/TELEOLOGICAL ARGUEMENT?

A

The complexity of nature proves there must be a designer (God)
* evidence of design + purpose = perfect amount of gases in the atmosphere to sustain life
* WILLIAM PALEY - analogy of a watchmaker
* Find watch in a field, it’s complex design would be proof that someone must’ve designed and made it (acceptence of watch being well designed in such a state must mean God is also a designer)

17
Q

Problems with the telelogical arguement?

A
  • existence of evil/illness = bad design
  • whole universe not explored, other parts may be chaos
  • existence of scientific arguements, the Big Bang
18
Q

What is the FIRST CAUSE ARGUEMENT?

A

Everything in the universe has a cause/needed to be caused by something else, the first uncaused causer is God (ex-nihilo)
* arguement created by Philosopher Thomas Aquinas

19
Q

What is the MORAL ARGUEMENT?

A

Feeling of a moral conscience is universal, existence of morals = existence of a moral lawgiver (God)
* Cardinal John Newman, feeling of guilt is God speaking through us, reminder that we are responsible to him
* Immanuel Kant, people commit to doing morally good things in life to recieve good judegement when they die, proves existence of God as people wouldn’t have incentive otherwise to be good

20
Q

What are the three different ways of interpreting scripture?

A

Fundamentalist - ABSOLUTE TRUTH
-Bible = literal word of God
-live strictly according to the Bible

Conservative - HUMANS INSPIRED BY WORD OF GOD
-Bible was written by humans, bound to have mistakes, should be interpreted to be applicable and relevant to the world
-e.g. Adam and Eve could be interpeted as myth

Liberal - BIBLE AS A SYMBOLIC GUIDE
-science > Bible
-individuals seek meanings from the Bible and apply it to their own lives

21
Q

SOA for a fundamentalist view of the Bible?

A

‘For the Word of God is alive and active…it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart’ (Hebrews)

22
Q

How is God revealed through Jesus?

A

GOD IS SHOWN IN A WAY HUMANS CAN UNDERSTAND
-demonstration of His agape love (e.g. crucifixion, performing miracles)
-Jesus as a human example of godly living, people should try to live like him

23
Q

SOA for God revealed as Jesus?

A

‘The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory…’ (John)

24
Q

What is a miracle? Give examples of miracles in the Bible.

A

A wonderful event or act that cannot be explained by the laws of nature
-Wedding of Caina, water into wine
-Feeding of the 5000
-Jesus’ ressurection

God intervening with the laws of nature

25
What are the 4 types of miracles?
* Healing * Miracles over nature * Raising the dead * Exorcism
26
What do Christians believe about miracles?
Some Christians may not view miracles as genuine fact, rather a **reflection of God's power** May argue can **God no longer interacts with the world via miracles, already revealed himself enough through Jesus AND the bible** Old testament - parting of red sea New testament - Jesus healing man from leprosy, Jesus calming the storm
27
How might God be revealed through people?
E.g. St Teresa of Calcutta, Martin Luther King, RCC priest being called into the ministry -their faith drives social change, **God must be working through these people** -Nicky Cruise, life of violence, gangs, transformed when meeting an inspirational Christian, **transformative power of Holy Spirit acts as inspiration and encouragment in faith**
28
What is a religious experience? Name the 4 (main) different forms of religious experience.
When people **claim to have some kind of encounter with God** -CONVERSIONS -MYSTICAL EXPERIENCES -VISIONS -CHARISMATIC + ECSTATIC EXPERIENCES
29
Explain conversions?
They cause a person to **adopt a belief in God** -may have a **new sense of direction** in their life, make **changes in their behaviour** + the choices they make e.g. Paul's conversion on the road to Damascus (**Acts**)
30
Explain mystical experiences?
Believer experiences an **overwhelming awareness of the presence of God, lead to feelings of awe and wonder** -individual strengthening of faith, left in no doubt God is real
31
Explain visions?
**Claims of seeing/hearing something supernatural** e.g. Isiah claims to see God on his throne surrounded by angels (**Isiah**)
32
Explain charismatic and ecstatic experiences?
Experience **RELIGIOUS ECSTASY**, altered state of mind, **intense religious and spiritual feelings about God**, TRANCE LIKE STATE Charismatic Churches - 'slain in the Spirit' Disagreement surrounding these experiences, nothing in the Bible abt laying hands on people + experiencing the Holy Spirit
33
Pentecostalism and Glossolalia?
Form of Christianity that **emphasises work of the Holy Spirit**, believe in the **baptism of the Holy Spirit** i.e. believer gives control of themselves to HS -**believe they're equipped with the gifts of the spirit** - prophecy, healing, speaking in tongues
34
What is a prophecy?
God-inspired prediction about a future event
35
What is speaking in tongues?
Speaking miraculously in a language unknown to the speaker, HS enables them to - can preach word of God
