Existence of God Flashcards
What is the teleological argument also known as?
The design argument
What does the teleological argument say about the existence of God?
That the world is too perfect and shows clear signs of being designed as opposed to being random, so if it ‘designed’ then it must have a ‘designer’ who I commonly referred to as God
Who were the three main figures who contributed to the teleological argument and what did they say?
William Paley: complexity and purpose (⏱)
St Thomas Aquïnas: order and regularity (🍯comb)
F.R Tennant: just right
What are problems with the design argument?
- It is mainly centred around humans
- the theory of evolution
- no universe to compare
- universe not actually complex
What does the cosmological argument say about God?
That there must be an uncaused causer due to causation
Define causation
The idea that for something to happen or an object to exist it has to be caused by something else (like cause and effect) it is sequential
Define contingent being
Anything that relies on something else for its own existence
Define infinite regress
Going back forever
Points that support the cosmological argument
- based on observation (our understanding of the world)
- fits with the Big Bang theory
- no other explanation that food the Big Bang theory
Points that object the cosmological argument
- we might be mistaken in our observation
- it is contradictory
- universe = necessary?
