Exersize and starvation overview Flashcards

1
Q

What is the sequence of events after feeding leading to starvation?

A
  • for 2 hrs can use glucose and fat from gut
  • 2-10 hrs after, you use liver glycogen stores to maintain blood glucose and start using fatty acids to help fuel some metabolic processes- preserving glucose for RBCs and the brain
  • 8-10 hrs after you start needing to make new glucose from amino acids, glycerol and lactate
  • then starvation: cortisol release, causing fat and protein breakdown, liver starts producing ketone bodies from fat breakdown and brain adapts to be able to use these instead of glucose

Q

describe the sources of energy used during a sprint?

A
  • first 2 seconds supplied by ATP
  • 5 seconds supplied by creatine phosphate
  • rest needs glycolysis and anerobic resp (pyruvate to lactate by pyruvate dehydrogenase) and break down of muscle glycogen

Q

What are the benefits of exersize? (6)

A
  • body composition changes (less fat)
  • glucose tolerance improves (more glycogenesis)
  • sensitivity to insulin increases
  • blood TAG decrease (less LDL and VLDL, more HDL)
  • blood pressure falls
  • psychological effects
