Exercise Testing Flashcards
reasons to use exercise testing?
diagnostic- symps limit end point
functional- stop at 4-6 mets or at 75% APMHR
theraputic- endpt. varies
Bruce and Balke are what kind of tests?
max protocol tests
Incremental max test?
Bruce
steady state max test?
Balke
what scales should u use with patients while doing exercise testing?
angina scale (1-4) dyspnea scale (1-4)
what is a functional capacity (in METS) that is an indicator of an adverse prognosis?
functional capacity < 5 METS
How do they use a PET to test exercise/stress tolerance?
PET uses a radioactive tracer to monitory coronary blood flow at rest, then they give u dipyridamole (an anticoagulant) to “stress” your heart and they watch the blood flow for any signs of stenosis
What is a SPECT test?
single photon emission computed tomography
uses gamma rays to detect myocardial blood flow. give the pt the radioactive stuff at the peak of the stress test then 4 hours later at rest.
in a SPECT test how can u tell if it is an MI or just ischemia?
if the cold spot stays cold during rest= MI (dead spot) if the cold spot goes away with rest= ischemia that just couldn’t keep up during exercise.
BUN norms
8-18
Creatine norms
5-75
Glucose norms
70-110
hemoglobin norms
females: 12-16g/1000 mL
males: 14-18g/1000 mL
hematocrit norms
females= 38-47% males= 40-54%
WBC count norms
4500-11000
high WBC counts indicate what?
infection
low hematocrit may indicate what?
chronic low O2 levels secondary to COPD
what do elevated BUN levels suggest?
heart or renal failure, retention of urea
what do decreased BUN levels suggest?
starvation, dehydration, organ dysfunction
what does >4.0 creatine leves suggest?
renal insufficiency or failure
what is 120-130 mg/100mL glucose diagnostic of?
prediabetic hyperglycemia
what is > or equal to 300 mg/100 mL glucose diagnostic of?
severe hyperglycemia
bilirubin norm?
<1.0
sodium norm?
135-145
norm RR?
12-20
normal temp in C?
< 37 degrees
