Exercise oncology research Flashcards
What are the main findings of the ERASE trial? (Exercise during active surveillance in PCa)
A HIIT intervention:
- Less cancer anxiety (recurrence)
- Improved fitness (VO2)
- Reduced PSA biomarkers.
- Slowed in vitro growth of cancer cells.
What are the main findings of the EXERT trial (Exercise during and after neoadjuvant rectal cancer treatment)?
Study group did HIIT walking/running 3 time per week during chemoradiation, and 150 min/week mod int during a break before surgery.
Exercise:
- Is safe and feasible
- May not improve fitness
may exacerbate symptoms and reduce QoL
- May not improve treatment toxicities or completion rates.
- May improve response to treatment!
General findings for exercise during treatment
EX improves: - physical fitness and function - Body comp - Some symptoms - Some aspects of QoL Preliminary evidence for - Improved chemo completion rate and treatment response
Main findings of the START trial (Supervised trials of aerobic versus resistance training in BC)
see slides
Main findings of the HELP trial (healthy exercise for lymphoma patients)
Compared AET vs UC in lymphoma patients receiving chemo or off treatment with a main interest of QoL.
- Both groups improved VO2
- Improvements in QoL of both groups, which was greatest in the least healthy and the unmarried.
Reduced general fatigue
Overall findings during survivorship
Similar outcomes to during treatment but with enhanced effects (QoL, fitness, some biomarkers). Preliminary evidence for improved cancer outcomes and overall survival.
