Exercise on the Skeletal system Flashcards
Positive effects of exercise on the skeletal system
Stronger Thicker Bones
Cause by high impact / weight bearing exercise.
Increases bone density through an increase in the storage of minerals (calcium).
Due to increased bone density, it can prevent the risk of injury.
Positive effects of exercise on the skeletal system
Increased stability of joins
Increases due to the increased strengthening of the connective tissue surrounding the joint.
Tendons + Ligaments become stronger which helps to prevent injury.
Muscles surrounding joint become stronger = more stable joint.
Positive effects of exercise on the skeletal system
Prevents Osteoporosis
Wearing of bones with age.
More common in women but will affect men.
Exercise helps strengthen bones which will assist the prevention of this condition over time.
Negative effects of exercise on the skeletal system
Chronic Overuse Injuries
Develop over time and have a slow, sustained development of symptoms.
Occur over a period of time after repeated or continual stress on hard or soft tissue.
Associated with training regimes with insufficient recovery time.
Negative effects of exercise on the skeletal system
Acute / Impact injuries
Sports injuries that happen in a moment. For example. a hamstring pull during a sprint race.
Common causes are collisions between 2 players or of a body part against a hard object.
Associated with poor technique.
They could cause osteoarthritis later in life.
