Exercise Health and Disease Flashcards
Physical activity
skeletal muscle movement that requires energy above resting levels
Exercise
physical activity that is planned , structures, repetitive, with final objective
Physical fitness
ability to carry out daily tasks with vigor and without undue fatigue and with ample energy
Energy expenditure
total amount of energy expended during exercise + rising energy . May be articulated in METS.
MET
rate of energy in exercise /rate at rest
1 MET =
oxygen uptake of 3.5 mol/kg/min
Overload
must keep stimulating when body plateus
Specificity
benefits of exercise are specific to muscle groups stimulated and energy systems engaged (aerobic aerobic)
Reversibility
body can adapt to inactivity
Maintenance
used when fitness goals are achieved
Fitness assessment should include
body comp cardiorespiratory fitness flexibility strength endurance
Frequency
moderate 5x week
vigorous 3x
First four weeks
1-3 days per week , avoid consecutive days..
With long term training …
“mesocycles” of changing frequency may be required
60-80% of VO2 max corresponds with
70-85% of HRmax
