Exercise and Drug Interactions Flashcards
Why does plasma GTN increase during exercise?
Exercise induces increased skin blood flow > Increased transdermal absorption of the drug
What is AOD9604?
An anti-obesity drug designed to increase lipolysis
What are some potential side effects of diuretics?
Dehydration
Hypokalaemia - K+ loss due to inihibition of Na reabsorption
Why are diuretics used in sports?
To dilute urine to mask the excretion of other substances
To reduce weight
Why are glucocorticosteroids used in sport?
To mask pain
Why does plasma salbutamol increase in response to exercise?
Increased respiratory blood flow
Increased resp rate
Increased epithelial permeability
What happens to digoxin levels during exercise?
There is increased binding of it to skeletal muscle leading to a decrease in plasma levels
Why are beta blockers levels generally higher during exercise?
Because their metabolism and excretion is higher dependent on liver and renal blood flow respectively which both decrease during exercise
Who are WADA?
The world anti-doping agency
What are some mechanisms of exercise inducd hypoglycaemia?
Accelerated insulin absorption from sites near exercising muscle
Exercise mediated enhancement of insulin action
Lack of decline in insulin secretion during exercise
Why are beta blockers used in sport?
As a relaxant - to decrease shaking
How does plasma insulin change in response to exercise?
It can increase
What type of glucocorticoids are controlled?
Some intra-articular
All systemally administered
Why is warfarin concentration lower during exercise cf to rest?
Increase plasma albumin binding
Increase metabolism of it
