Exercise 9 Axial Skeleton Flashcards
How many bones are in the adult skeleton?
206 bones in the adult skeleton
The adult skeleton can be broken into two divisions. What are they?
Axial and Appendicular Skeleton divisions
What bones do the axial skeleton include?
The Skull, Hyoid Bone, Vertebral Column, and Thoracic cage. Smaller bones in the ear ossicles are also included.
What do the major bones of the skull consist of?
The cranial and facial bones
What is the job of the cranial bones?
Harbors and protects the brain and houses organs of hearing and equilibrium.
What is the job of the facial bones?
Provides the shape of the face, house the teeth, and provide attachments for all the muscles of facial expression.
What bones make up the cranial bones?
Parietal bones, temporal bones, Frontal bone, Occipital bone, Sphenoid bone, and ethmoid bone.
What are sutures?
Immovable joints between bones of the skull.
What four sutures make up the skull?
Coronal, sagittal, lambdoid, and squamous sutures
What bones make up the facial bones?
Maxillae, zygomatic bones, lacrimal bones, nasal bones, inferior nasal conchae, palatine bones, mandible, and vomer.
Define Supraorbital Foramina. (Frontal bone)
One opening located above the orbit of each eye for supraorbital nerve and artery.
Define Supraorbital ridges and margins. (Frontal bone)
Thickening of frontal bone superior to orbit of each eye.
Define External Auditory Meatus (Temporal)
tube-like opening for ear canal.
Define Mastoid process (Temporal)
Rounded projection posterior to external auditory meatus; attachment for muscles.
Define Styloid Process (Temporal)
Long, thin projection posterior on inferior skull surface; attachment for muscles and ligaments of tongue and neck.
