Bacterial Conjunctivitis

A

Chloramphenicol 1% Eye ointment Ocular Applied every 3 hours Treatment to be continued for 48 hours after the eye appears normal Broad spectrum antibiotic for treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis Orthoptists should be aware of antimicrobial stewardship and only use in individual circumstances where treatment maybe warranted.

Fusidic Acid 1% Modified release eye drops 1 drop applied twice daily Treatment to be continued for 48 hours after the eye appears normal Antibiotic drops for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis where the organisms is known to be susceptible to the antibiotic (gram positive). Orthoptists should be aware of antimicrobial stewardship and only use in individual circumstances where treatment maybe warranted.

refraction or occlusion

A

Atropine sulphate 1% Eye drops For refraction: 1 drop daily for 3 days prior to appointment For atropine occlusion: 1 drop twice weekly into the better seeing eye Iritis/Uveitis: 1 drop into the eye max 4 times a day (3 in children) For refn: 3 doses For atropine occlusion: 12 doses (6 week supply) Should not be used in patients with narrow anterior chamber or closed angle glaucoma. Use in caution with children especially children with low body weight. Lowest dose of atropine should be administered to achieve the desired effect. Children should be carefully monitored for 30 mins after administration of the drug. If product falls outside the eye it should be washed immediately.

Lidocaine 4% with fluorescein 0.25 (Oxybuprocaine 0.4%, Proxymetacaine 0.5%, Tetracaine 1%) Eye drops 1 or more drops as
required To be used as
topical
anaesthesia for
diagnostic
procedures such
as Goldmann
tonometry Protect the anaesthetised eye for 30mins or longer in elderly patients from foreign body contamination. Use with caution in hyperaemia as greatly increases the rate of systemic absorption through the conjunctiva.

dilation for refraction

A

Cyclopentolate 0.5% Eye drops 12 years to adult 1 drop which can be repeated after 10 mins if necessary For refraction and fundus check: One or two drops as required Topical mydriatic and cycloplegic.
Caution advised in hyperaemia as
systemic absorption can increase
Do not use in confirmed or
suspected narrow angle glaucoma
Children should be observed for
45mins post instillation.
