Executive Function Treatment Flashcards
Goal Management Training
Levine et. al.
Based on theory of goal neglect
5 stages:
1) General purpose
2) Evaluate relevant goals in a situation
3) Create sub-goals
4) Monitor attempts at a solution
5) If mismatch, repeat entire process
Apply this process to functional tasks
EF recommendation
Therapy should incorporate or adapt Goal Management Trainign (GMT) looking for relevant goals in a situation, creating sub-goals, and monitoring the result of an attempted solution to the situation
Effectiveness of GMT
GMT has been found to reduce errors & time to complete a task
Planning/Self-Monitoring strategies
Ciccerone & Wood: self-instructional training procedure to encourage planning & self-monitoring
3 stages of self-verbalization
1) overt verbalization
2) verbal instruction ending
3) covert verbal mediation of appropriate responses
Should lead to less task-related errors and gradual reduction in off task behaviors
Rick’s “anticipate, anticipate, anticipate”
- anticipate any event/situation that will increase the cognitive burden
- need to plan in times for breaks “cognitive breaks” and anticipate what you will need to do/cognitive resources needed to get through day efficiently
