Excretory Unit Lesson 3: Excretory Disorders Flashcards
What is pyelonephritis?
The inflammation of the kidney due to presence of a pathogen.
aka kidney infection
What is the result of pyelonephritis?
Inflammation of the kidney interferes with normal kidney function, reducing efficacy of blood filtration
What causes pyelonephritis?
Bacteria or viruses that manage to enter the kidney (usually via the ureters)
What is nephrolithiasis?
Granules form from precipitated substances in the urine that cause pain and potentially block passage of effected nephrons
aka kidney stones
What is the result of nephrolithiasis?
Until they are urinated, the individual will experience pain and could experience kidney damage if the stones become large enough
What causes nephrolithiasis?
Imbalance in urinary pH, too much animal protein in diet, urinary tract infections
What is end stage renal disease?
The kidney can no longer perform its filtration duties well enough to keep wastes from accumulating in the blood
aka kidney failure
What is the result of end stage renal disease?
The individual may experience a number of different symptoms that result from accumulated wastes, and eventually death
What is urinary tract infection?
A pathogen infects regions of the urinary tract (urethra, bladder, uterus, or kidneys), causing it to become inflamed and have difficulty functioning properly
What is the result of urinary tract infection?
Pain at the site of infection; possible difficulty urinating; infection could travel up tract to more serious areas
What is the cause of urinary tract infection?
Exposure to pathogens at site of urethra
What is bladder cancer?
Bladder cells undergo harmful mutation that results in the formation of tumor cells
What is the result of bladder cancer?
Blood in urine, possible pain in bladder. If left unchecked, cancer can metastasize to other regions of the body
What is the cause of bladder cancer?
Exposure to carcinogenic substances over time.
Cigarette smoke is a common one
