Excretion -The Kidneys Flashcards
The kidneys are part which system in the body?
The URINARY SYSTEM
What 3 main roles do the kidneys play?
- removal of UREA which is produced in the LIVER from EXCESS AMINO ACIDS
- ADJUSTMENT OF ION (SALT) LEVELS in the blood
- ADJUSTMENT OF WATER CONTENT of the blood
What do NEPHRONS do in the kidneys?
NEPHRONS perform filtration and reabsorption
Where does FILTRATION happen?
in the area of the GLOMLERULOUS and BOWMAN’s CAPSULE
Describe the process of ULTRAFILTRATION
- Blood from the renal artery flows into the GLOMERULOUS (a bundle of capillaries)
- HIGH PRESSURS is built up squeezing water, urea, glucose and ions out of the blood into the BOWMAN’s CAPSULE
- The membranes between the capillaries and Bowman’s Capsule act like a filter so big molecules like protein and bloos cells are not squeezed out
What is the filtered liquid called?
The GLOMERULAR FILTRATE
Where does REABSORPTION happen in the kidney?
The rest of the NEPHRON
Name the parts of the NEPHRON
BOWMAN’s CAPSULE ( GLOMERULOUS)
PROXIMAL CONVOLUTED TUBULE
LOOP OF HENLE
DISTAL CONVOLUTED TUBULE
Where does the nephron drain into?
A COLLECTING DUCT
What is the process of REABSORPTION?
All the GLUCOSE is reabsorbed back into the blood to be used for respiration (in the mitochondria)
SUFFICIENT IONS are reabsorbed. Excess ions are lost in the urine
SUFFICIENT WATER is reabsorbed from theCOLLECTING DUCT
Name 4 substances that are filtered from the GLOMLERULOUS and 3 substanes that are reabsorbed
Flitered - water ions glucose urea
Reabsorption -glucose water ions
What forms URINE?
Water, Ions and urea
Name the parts of the URINARY SYSTEM
Kidneys (nephrons, collecting duct, collecting part of the kidney) URETER BLADDER (Storage) and out the URETHRA
