Excretion Flashcards
Nephridia
Annelida. Excretes water, mineral salts, urea
Malphigian tubules
Arthropods. Accumulate mineral salts and uric acid, expelled with solid wastes
Kidney
Filters blood
Reabsorbs amino acids, glucose, salts
Secretes urea, uric acid, and other wastes
Forms urine in nephron
Nephron
Blood enters glomerulus, liquid and small particles go through to Bowman’s capsule. Blood passes down nephron tubule through 1) proximal convoluted tubule 2) the loop of Henle 3) the distal convoluted tubule and 4) the collecting duct.
1) proximal convoluted tubule- active transport pumps glucose, amino acids, sodium, proteins back out and water follows
2) loop of Henle- dips in medulla (inner kidney), water drawn out, sodium pumped in to maintain high sodium concentration
3) distal tubule
4) collecting duct- into medulla, ADH (antidiuretic hormone, or vasopressin) determines concentration of urine. Also aldosterone
