Examples of conflict and resolution Flashcards
Give an example where you have been creative with building rapport
I am a big fan of mirroring. Using body language and speech patterns to enhance listening and receptiveness with patients.
Using personality skillfully to build connection
What do you do if a patient is escalating?
- Evaluate safety
- Verbal deescalation
- Offer support / listening / PRN
- Explain consequence of behaviour
If continues to escalate:
- Notify doctor and discuss options / orders
- Constant obs / seclusion
- Reassess and debrief
What is some feedback on performance you have received?
Sometimes I can be a bit too nice and patients have taken advantage of that.
I have since become more conscious of the amount of attention I should be giving a patient to avoid behavioural traits and have limited structured interactions with these types of patients
Give an example of a conflict with a co-worker and how it was resolved
I like to avoid drama and conflict so I haven’t had many issues
In the past if I sensed that something was off I would just be transparent and ask if anything was going on or anything needed to be clarified and i haven’t got any bad responses
Give an example of deescalation and what was the result
Pt was in hospital for over a month
Dog was just put down
SW was gone and she was requesting
Pt exploded, voicing she wanted to leave and hurt people
I had good rapport so I approached her, let her rant in a safe space, identified / validated needs and wants
Pt calmed down, denied feelings of wanting to harm others
Give an example of a challenging patient
(Brayden from Terrace)
Dx of schizophrenia, very disorganized but also behavioural, easily agitated and pushing limits
-Solution: Consistency, don’t let patient push limits
-Remind pt that is behaviour becomes unmanageable, back to seclusion
Give an example where you advocated for a patient
- Advocated for client who had phobia of needles (Therapy unsuccessful) to have access to special site of injections. His sister was immunocompromised and couldn’t get the vaccine. Pt was able to go to special clinic
Give an example of when ur bias made you resist change?
Fundamental attribution error:
Catch myself thinking this way along with others but have now since changed this.
Tendency to attribute someone’s particular behaviors to stereotypes while attributing our own similar behavior to external factors.
Example: See someone running late to work, first thought is poor time management
But if I get a flat tire and late for a shift, I would expect them to understand that this is an external factor rather than my personal behaviour
Explain a time you felt overwhelmed with your workload and its demands and how you handled it.
One patient was throwing up, another just got bad news from a phone call and wanted to self harm, admission on the way.
Multi tasked and asked for help
A voluntary patient wants to be discharged at 2200h. Patient is refusing to speak to her doctor tomorrow and refusing to speak to the DMO. The Patient’s family is here to pick her up. What are you going to do/say?
Notify Primary Psychiatrist
Notify DMO
AMA form
Patient C approaches the nursing station and states they saw patient A go into patient B’s room. What are some reasons a patient would be found in someone’s room?
Drugs, sexual encounter, confusion/disoriented, violence, dementia.
