Examination and Assessment Flashcards
What questions are prosthodontic history
What type of denture is the patient currently wearing?
How old is the denture?
What materials have previous dentures been made from?
Do they have a “favourite” denture?
What 2 things are assessed in prosthodontics
Patient and denture
What should be assessed in the extra-oral assessment
-Midline
-Incisal plane
-Lip position (smile line)
High (gummy)
Medium (normal)
Low (don’t see much tooth)
What is the nasio-labial angle
The angle of where the nose meets the top of the lips
Most asthetic with teeth around 90-110 degrees
Most people without teeth have a more obtuse angle
What are the relevant factors to consider for prosthodontics
Intraoral access
Have you got space to insert/remove a denture?
Plaque control
OH must be optimised before denture provision
Tooth mobility and periodontal disease
Are there suitable abutments, is there likely to be further tooth loss?
Gag reflex
Can you take an impression? Will the patient tolerate a denture?
Trauma/ulceration
Is there trauma from an existing denture?
Dry mouth
Often medication related in denture patients – increased risk of root caries
Retained roots
Can they be left as overdenture abutments to retain alveolar bone?
Compromised teeth
Toothwear, caries
How can we assess residual ridge form
Feel the ridges with your finger
How atrophic is it?
Any displaceable tissue?
Number/position/length
What is the extension of dentures
Over Extension:(denture goes up into cheeks)
Discomfort, looseness in function, speech issues, impingement on frenal attachments, difficulty swallowing and gagging etc
Under Extension:(very low edges)
Looseness in function, traumatic ulceration, food trapping under the denture
