Attempts to explain the observed correlation between tense/aspect morphemes according to the Relevance Principle (aspect is more relevant than tense, mood, or agreement) and Congruence Principle (learners choose the morpheme whose aspectual meaning is most congruent with the aspectual meaning of the verb). In the early stages of acquisition, morphology encodes only inheretne aspectual distinctions (i.e., it does not encode tense or grammatical aspect).
