Exam vocab words chapter seven Flashcards
Null hypothesis
The hypothesis of equal population means. Any observed difference between samples is seen as a chance occurrence resulting from sampling error.
Research hypothesis
The hypothesis that regards any observed difference between samples as reflecting a true population difference and not just sampling error.
Level of Significance
A level of probability at which the null hypothesis can be rejected and the research hypothesis can be accepted.
Sampling distribution of differences between means
A frequency distribution of a large number of differences between random sample means that have been drawn from a given population.
Statistically significant difference
A sample difference that reflects a real population difference and not just sampling error.
Critical values
The area in the tail(s) of a sampling distribution that dictates that the null hypothesis be rejected.
