1) Susan will soon start work in a nursery. She has attended an induction that covered personal hygiene instructions and security measures. Susan has also been given information about legislation that applies to her work in the nursery.
(a) Explain why Susan will have to follow the personal hygiene rules ‘no jewellery’ and use ‘correct hand washing routines’ while working in the nursery. (5 marks)
General:
- Prevents transfer of bacteria,
- Destroys bacteria,
- Care worker carries less germs/bacteria,
- Ensures high level of cleanliness,
- Reduces opportunity for spreading bacteria/germs,
- Role modelling good practise to children,
- Duty of care,
- Reduce chance of being ill/ chance of illness,
- Children more susceptible to infection,
- Children have a weaker immune system.
No jewellery:
- Bacteria/germs may be on the jewellery (not wearing it removes places for bacteria to grow/ spread),
- Bacteria could transfer to food (so not wearing jewellery helps prevent cross contamination),

Correct hand washing:
- Germs accumulate on the hands (touching surfaces, objects, people through the day,
- Frequent hand washing limits the transfer of viruses, bacteria (so reduces the spread of infection),
- Hand gel a quick way of sterilising the skin.
{Remember that its the level of response which separates the bands of marking. A level 3 band is full marks only if the answer is detailed and answers the relevant question with correct use of terminology}.
Identifying staff and receiving and monitoring visitors are two security measures used in the nursery.
Explain how these two security measures can protect individuals in the nursery.

Identifying staff:
- Children know who is staff even if they don’t know the person,
- Easier to spot unauthorised people in the nursery,
- Easy for parents/ visitors to recognise who is a member and not,
- Use of lanyards/ named staff ID’s badges/ uniform for quick and easy identification.
Receiving and monitoring visitors:
- Buzzer entry/ staffed reception/ signing in and out controls asses to the nursery/ children,
- CCTV monitoring entrances,
- Know who has entered the building, who they are visiting,
- Knowing who is in the building,
- Only authorised people can enter,
- Protects from strangers who cannot just walk in,
- Visitor badges/ visitor lanyards (Quick recognition)

Woodbridge is a residential care home for older adults. Some of the residents have dementia. Recently one of the residents with dementia was found confused and alone in a nearby park. The staff at Woodbridge try to balance the rights of all residents with the need for safety.
