What is private health insurance?
A type of insurance under which members pay a premium fee in return for payment towards health-related costs not covered by Medicare
What is a chronic condition?
Any disease or condition that lasts longer than six months. Usually can’t be cured and therefore requires ongoing treatment/management. Examples include arthritis and asthma
An individual’s or a population’s overall health, taking into account various aspects such as life expectancy, amount of disability and levels of disease risk factors
Health status
Standard statistics that are used to measure and compare health status (e.g. life expectancy, mortality rates, morbidity rates)
Health indicators
Obstetric haemorrhage
Excessive bleeding during pregnancy, labour or after birth and can lead to maternal death
Advantages of aid provided by NGO’s
- Focuses on small community based projects
- Focuses on health and wellbeing needs and promotes community development and participation
- Can often access areas that other forms of aid is unable to reach
- Often have strong connections with local communities which means that trust is already established
- Have a comprehensive knowledge of poverty and its causes at a local community level
