What is the difference between the CMTO and the RMTAO?
CMTO - College of Massage Therapists of Ontario.
Regulates profession under the RHPA- requires formal training and passing of exams. CMTO is the governing body and consists of a counsel (9 RMTs, 8 non RMTS). Have to be a member to be a RMT
RMTAO- Registered Massage Therapy Association of Ontario, act as voice of the profession. Membership is voluntary

What does the RHPA cover?
Regulated Health Professionals Act, 1991 instituted to address the risk of sexual impropriety.
Covers the following aspects:
-Prohibitions (controlled acts, use of titles “doctor”, prescribing drugs
-Miscellaneous such as aboriginal healers and midwives
-table, naming health professions covered under the act
-self governing health professionals and the relevant act
-Health Professionals Procedural Code (HPPC)- includes provisions for sexual abuse, complaints, discipline, incapacity, appeals to court, registrars powers of investigation, quality assurance, patient relations, reporting of health professionals, funding for therapy and health professional corporations

What is the harm clause in the RHPA
-aims to protect individuals from unqualified practitioners or non regulated individuals who cause serious harm without performing controlled acts.
““No person, other than a member treating or advising within the scope of practice of his or her profession, shall treat or advise a person with respect to his or her health in circumstances in which it is reasonably foreseeable that serious bodily harm may result from the treatment or advice or from an omission from them”
What is the HCCA?
Health Care Consent Act, 1996
- outlines very specific requirements for obtaining consent before treatment and addresses situations where someone can’t consent
- Makes it easier for RMTs to understand procedures they are obligated to follow in obtaining consent

What legislations are the foundation of the Massage Therapy Act?

What are Standards of Practice?
- Developed by the College, displays its commitment to protecting the public
- Developed to be client centered
- Sets a minimum standard RMT must perform at
What is the Scope of Practice?
It outlines what the discipline attempts to do aka “this is our lane”.
The Practice of MT is the assessment of the soft tissues and joints and the treatment and prevention of physical dysfunction and pain of soft tissues and joints by manipulation to develop, maintain, rehabilitate, or augment physical function and relieve pain
Why have Standards of Practice?
- So RMT understands what is expected
- Assists educators with curriculum design
- registration and admission into CMTO
- investigations of misconduct

- fitness to practice hearings

- the public is able to assess quality of treatment through a written standard
Who is responsible for Wall certificates and ID Cards?
MT must protect their registration # , wall certificate, ID card from fraudulent activities
What level CPR do RMTS have to have (regulated by college)
CPR- Heartsaver level or higher
First aid- emergency level or higher
What is a dual registrant?
Dual registrants are member of the College but also members of another health profession (under the Regulated Health Professional Act, or drugless Health Practitioners Act)
What must dual registrants be mindful of?
-they must declare on their annual renewal of registration any other health college/board that they are registered with
-they have to make sure they have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform MT
-make sure they are functioning within their scope of practice as a MT
-can’t bill/ count hours if they aren’t practicing as a MT
-if they are registered to perform controlled acts- can’t do them when working as a RMT
-can’t issue receipts as MT if they weren’t performing MT

How many hours do you need every 3 years?
500 hours of direct care every 3 years
What if you don’t meet the required hours?
Members who don’t meet the requirement for 500 hours of direct care every 3 years.. or members who have been away for 3 years or more must complete a refresher course before they can apply for a general certificate/ renew registration
What does the CMTO say about post termination relationships?
- shouldn’t enter into a sexual relationship with a former client for 1 year after treatment has stopped
- MT may not initiate or respond to any invitation from a client for a sexual relationship
