What is the difference between the CMTO and the RMTAO?

A

CMTO - College of Massage Therapists of Ontario.
Regulates profession under the RHPA- requires formal training and passing of exams. CMTO is the governing body and consists of a counsel (9 RMTs, 8 non RMTS). Have to be a member to be a RMT

RMTAO- Registered Massage Therapy Association of Ontario, act as voice of the profession. Membership is voluntary

A

Covers the following aspects:
-Prohibitions (controlled acts, use of titles “doctor”, prescribing drugs
-Miscellaneous such as aboriginal healers and midwives
-table, naming health professions covered under the act
-self governing health professionals and the relevant act
-Health Professionals Procedural Code (HPPC)- includes provisions for sexual abuse, complaints, discipline, incapacity, appeals to court, registrars powers of investigation, quality assurance, patient relations, reporting of health professionals, funding for therapy and health professional corporations

-Standards and Regulations e-Workshop
-Member will complete the RCAT Refresher Competence Assessment Tool
-An approved tutor will verify that the member has the competencies on the RCAT and design a course to remedy areas needing improvement
-Practical part of the course will require the applicant to demonstrate minimum entry requirement in clinical skills, assessment skills, remedial exercises, and soft tissue modalities (10 hours for general refresher, 16 hours for enhanced refresher course)
-At the end of the course, tutor signs another RCAT
-both member/ student and tutor submit evaluations to college

-Self reporting of: offenses and professional negligence or malpractice- a written report must be filed. Speeding tickets an municipal infractions made by a court or in a civil proceeding or lawsuit, or if you have a finding of professional misconduct or malpractice against you
-Reporting of others: suspected sexual abuse- written report must be filled out if you have reasonable grounds to believe a patient has been abused by any health care provider
suspected child abuse or neglect- the Child and Family Services Act requires registrants of the college to report it
suspected elder abuse or neglect- must report to Director of Nursing Homes
