2
Q

most of Canadas industry is focused on natural resources. this leads to two things

A

Significant progress when world economies are growing.

Retraction of progress when world economies are stagnant.

Q

Canadian Manufacturers have increased output. How?

A

By emphasizing strategies with supplies and other companies to better satisfy customer needs.
Continuous improvement, quality, site selection, use of Internet to unite companies
Better production techniques (i.e: enterprise resource planning, computer-integrated manufacturing, flexible manufacturing, lean manufacturing, robotics).

Q

Operations Management

A

Is a specialized area in management that converts or transforms resources (including HR) into goods and services.
Firms in both the manufacturing and the service sectors use operations managers.

Q

Productivity is hard to measure. Why?

A

Traditional method to track production was through tracking inputs (worker hours) compared to outputs (dollars). Therefore, quality improvements are not weighed.

6
Q

how to counter difficulty in measuring productivity

A

new information systems must be developed to measure the quality of goods and services, the speed of delivery, and customer satisfaction.

10
Q

why is facility layout important

A

because manufacturing depends on its ability to remain competitive, therefore needing to make inputs less costly (reducing costs of labour & land) or increasing outputs from present inputs. (increasing productivity).

Q

other criteria for selecting facility location include

A
  1. are resources are plentiful and inexpensive?
    1. are skilled workers are available or are trainable?
    2. are taxes are low and does the local government offer support?
    3. are energy and water available?
    4. are transportation costs low?
    5. is the quality of life and quality of education high?

Q

Materials Requirement Planning

A

MRP = computer-based operations management system that uses sales forecasts to make sure the needed parts and materials are available at the right time and place.

14
Q

Enterprise Resource Planning

A

ERP = newer version of MRP.

It combines the computerized functions of all the divisions and subsidiaries of the firm (finance, material requirements planning, human resources, and order fulfilment) into software that uses a single database.
This leads to shorter period of time between orders and payments, less staff to do ordering and order processing, reduced inventories, better customer service for all firms involved.

Q

JIT Inventory Control (Just-in-Time)

A

JIT = suppliers deliver parts & materials just in time to go on the assembly line so they do not have to be stored in warehouses. (Reduces required inventory space).
i.e: Car manufacturing plants.

16
Q

six sigma quality

A

(3.4 defects per 1 million products) -> detects potential problems before they occur.

17
Q

Statistical Quality Control (SQC)

A

process that some managers use to continually monitor all processes in production to ensure that quality is being built into the product from the beginning.

18
Q

Statistical Process Control (SPC)

A

process of taking statistical samples of product components at each stage of production process and plotting those results on a graph. Variances in quality standards can be corrected.

19
Q

ISO9000

A

European standard for quality

20
Q

ISO4000

A

Collection of best practices for managing an organizations impact on the environment.

21
Q

Process manufacturing

A

= process that physically or chemically changes materials.

22
Q

Assembly process

A

= Putting materials together.

Production processes are either continuous or intermittent.

23
Q

Continuous process

A

= Production run is long and turns out finished goods over time. (Toyota)

24
Q

Intermittent Process

A

= Production run is short and machines are changed frequently to manufacture different products.

25
Q

Flexible Manufacturing

A

= Designing machines to produce a variety of products.

26
Q

Lean Manufacturing =

A

Production of goods using as little of the needed inputs as possible.
(less human effort, less manufacturing space, less investment in tools, less engineering time to develop new product.) Mass production is the opposite of this.

27
Q

Mass Customization =

A

Making custom-designed goods and services for a large number of individual customers.

Flexible manufacturing makes mass customization possible.
Flexible machines can produce a customized good as fast as mass-produced goods.
Mass Customization is important in service industries.

28
Q

CAD system

A

computer aided design

CAD is already incorporated into CAM

29
Q

CAM system

A

computer aided manufacturing

30
Q

CIM system

A

computer integrated manufacturing

31
Q

PERT/GANTT

A

These charts are used to by Operations managers to ensure their products or services are provided on time and on budget.

32
Q

PERT chart

A

PERT = Program Evaluation & Review Technique

PERT chart is used for planning.

33
Q

GANTT chart

A

Gantt = Bar graph showing production managers what projects are underway and what stage they are in at any given time.
Shows current status of all projects at a glance.
Gantt is used to measure progress.
