Q

What is the difference between a colon and a semicolon

A

The statement that precedes a colon is always an independent clause, but what follows the colon can be either a dependent or independent clause. (This is in stark contrast to the semicolon, which always connects two independent clauses.)

Q

When are semicolons used

A

It signals a more complete break than a comma, but not as complete as a period break. It’s a “halfway-in-between” mark. It’s used to show that two sentences are related in some way.

Q

How could you rephrase this sentence with a semicolon:

“I brought my umbrella, but I left it in the car.”

A

“I brought my umbrella; I left it in the car.”

When joining two independent clauses to make a compound sentence, a semicolon can be used instead of the comma and conjunction.

Q

What is the difference between a restrictive and a nonrestrictive clause

A

Nonessential clauses are called nonrestrictive. Clauses which are essential are called restrictive. Both restrictive and nonrestrictive clauses may begin with a relative pronoun (such as who, whom, whose, that, which). A relative pronoun refers to the noun or pronoun that precedes it.

e.g.
“John, who spent the last three days fishing, is back on the job again.” (nonrestrictive)

“The gentleman who is standing by the fireplace is a well-known composer.” (restrictive)
