- Hero –> Central figure in the story who goes on the journey
- Shadow –> Villains, enemies or the enemy within. Can also be repressed grief, anger, frustration that is dangerous if it doesn’t have an outlet.
- Mentor –> The hero’s guide, can also be beliefs. Someone who provides life lessons and advice
- Herald –> Who brings the call to adventure to the hero. Can be a person or an event.
What are the last 4 types of ARCHETYPES in the HJ?
- Threshold Guardian –> Stands in the way at important turning points, includes jealous enemies who try to keep hero from completing journey
- Trickster –> Individual who brings humour to the story, potentially causing mischief
- Allies –> Characters who help the hero through the journey; side kicks, buddies who also advise the hero
- Shapeshifter –> Character(s) in the story who is two faced or physically change appearance to trick the hero

Essay Idea: Morality
Thesis: A lack of moral code leads to chaos, specifically the ruin of communities, the downfall of individuals, the doubt of individuals and the corruption of good.

macduff had loyalty to his country and a strong sense of justice.
macbeth had his ambition, greed and willingness to kill.
Essay Idea: Power and Control
Thesis: The abuse of unchecked power and corruption negatively impacts individuals, relationships, and communities resulting in the downfall of many.
POINT IDEAS:
- Abuse of power (Scott) + (Macbeth) fogged their minds, leading to irrational/inhumane decisions
- Relationships between people (Scott + Cam, Macbeth + LM) broke apart
- Communities became more divided, tension
Essay Idea: Responding to challenges
Thesis: In — a person’s response to crisis can affect their overall sanity, moral compass, and the well-being of their community.
POINT IDEAS:
- Bad response to crisis leads to insanity (Macbeth + Cam/Scott)
- One loses their morals when they fail to respond appropriately (Scott + Macbeth)
- The community is harmed due to the failed response (not enough food, arguments of resources), distrust and hatred
Essay Idea: Society (structure, breakdown, survival/rebuilding)
Thesis: In — the society of both texts play a pivotal role in shaping the actions and fates of their central characters, highlighting the interplay b/w social hierarchies, cultural values, and individual agency in times of crisis.
POINT IDEAS:

Thesis: In Waubgeshig rice’s MOTCS and william Shakespeare Macbeth, Positive leadership brings stability, peace and a sense of belonging ,whereas negative leadership causes lack of respects for values or traditions, chaos and insanity.
In — positive and negative leadership styles heavily influence character’s morals, decision-making and overall impact on others.
POINT IDEAS:
- Positive leadership (Evan + Malcolm) vs Negative leadership (Scott + Macbeth)
- Negative = less integrity/respect for life/values/traditions, less accountability, strike fear into people

Thesis: In both — chaos and disorder play a key role in shaping one’s ideas, desires and overall environment.
POINT IDEAS:
- Chaos and disorder leads to mass panic, causing communities to crumble.
- chaos made characters’ mindsets change completely (survival mode), changed the decisions they made
