Exam Questions Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the factors that affect the fluid friction acting against the swimmer during 100m backstroke [5 MARKS]
A
- The faster the swimmer, the greater the fluid friction
- The flatter body position/tear drop shape leads to FF
- Reduced front cross-sectional area leads to less FF
- Dolphin action leads to less FF
- Smoother surface/shaving/special swimwear/hats leads to less FF
- Less dense water leads to less FF
- Swimming underwater leads to less FF
2
Q
Compare the shape of the flight path of a shot putt with that of a fast moving badminton shuttle. Explain the reasons for differences in their respective flight paths [4 MARKS]
A
- Shot putt follows parabolic/symmetrical flight path
- because air resistance is negligible
- because weight is dominant/shot has low speed
- Shuttlecock follows non-parabolic/asymmetrical flight path
- because air resistance is dominant forces as
- speed of shuttle is large/weight is negligible
3
Q
Explain how a lift force is imparted to a discus during flight and describe its effects on the flight path of the discus [6 MARKS]
A
- Discuss is an aerofoil shape
- Takes an appropriate angle of attack to the direction of motion
- Air has to travel further over the top of the discus
- Air travels faster over the top of the discus
- This creates a low pressure area on top of the discus
- Called Bernoulli principle
- Air tries to move from high to low pressure, creating the lift force
- Makes flight path non-parabolic, asymmetrical
- Lengthens flight path, further horizontal distance, discus travels further
