Q

Describe the factors that affect the fluid friction acting against the swimmer during 100m backstroke [5 MARKS]

A
  1. The faster the swimmer, the greater the fluid friction
  2. The flatter body position/tear drop shape leads to FF
  3. Reduced front cross-sectional area leads to less FF
  4. Dolphin action leads to less FF
  5. Smoother surface/shaving/special swimwear/hats leads to less FF
  6. Less dense water leads to less FF
  7. Swimming underwater leads to less FF

Q

Compare the shape of the flight path of a shot putt with that of a fast moving badminton shuttle. Explain the reasons for differences in their respective flight paths [4 MARKS]

A
  1. Shot putt follows parabolic/symmetrical flight path
  2. because air resistance is negligible
  3. because weight is dominant/shot has low speed
  4. Shuttlecock follows non-parabolic/asymmetrical flight path
  5. because air resistance is dominant forces as
  6. speed of shuttle is large/weight is negligible

Q

Explain how a lift force is imparted to a discus during flight and describe its effects on the flight path of the discus [6 MARKS]

A
  1. Discuss is an aerofoil shape
  2. Takes an appropriate angle of attack to the direction of motion
  3. Air has to travel further over the top of the discus
  4. Air travels faster over the top of the discus
  5. This creates a low pressure area on top of the discus
  6. Called Bernoulli principle
  7. Air tries to move from high to low pressure, creating the lift force
  8. Makes flight path non-parabolic, asymmetrical
  9. Lengthens flight path, further horizontal distance, discus travels further
