What are symbols?
Symbols represent something much deeper than what they depict.
Ex. The Cross could mean Christianity, faith… Etc.
Artworks carry a variety of symbols to convey meaning.
What is art criticism?
The analysis, dissection, and description of art.
What are the three questions that art criticism focuses on?
What is it? What does it do? What is it worth?
What are the two types of criticism?
Formal and contextual
What does formal criticism focus on?
It approaches the work of art solely on its own terms.
What does contextual criticism focus on?
Focuses on the meaning in context in which the art was created. Using the background of the artist, his life, his or her culture, etc.
What is being criticized when we evaluate the art’s artisanship?
How or from what is the work crafted/constructed?
How well was it executed?
Is it interesting?
How do we evaluate art based on its communication?
What is the artist trying to say?
Does the artist succeed in getting the message across?
Was the artwork worth the effort?
What is musical notation?
Musical notation compromises a system of writing music so that the composer can communicate his pitches and rhythms clearly to the performer.
What is two dimensional art?
2D; art created on a flat surface
What is the media?
What the artist uses to create the art.
What are some types of 2D media?
Oil on canvas, watercolor, acrylic, photograph, photogram
Why study art?
To experience the world though the eyes of the artist; a different perspective.
What do we look at when we see art?
Content that triggers an emotional response.
What is hue?
The basic colors of the spectrum.
What is value?
The brightness or darkness of the hue.
What is foreshortening?
The illusion that parallel lines meet in the distance and that shapes and forms diminish in size as they recede in the distance.
