πότερα τὸν µέγαν θησαυρὸν φυλάξει τὰ παιδία ἢ ἐκ τῆς οἰκίᾱς κλέψει;
Will the children guard the great treasure, or will they steal it from the house?
ὁ φιλόσοφος ἠρώτησεν εἴ ποτ’ ἔχοµεν τοῖς ὀφθαλµοῖς τοὺς θεοὺς ἰδεῖν.

ποῖ ἔσπευδες, ὦ παῖ; οὐκ ἑώρᾱς οἵτινες κίνδῡνοι ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ εἰσιν;

µῶν µέλλετε ἐρωτήσειν ἡµᾶς ὅ τι πρττοµεν; πᾶσι γὰρ δῆλόν ἐστι τὸ ἔργον ὃ πρττοµεν.

ἐρώτησον τούτους τοὺς ξένους τοὺς οὐκ ὄντας Ἕλληνας
ὁπόθεν πεπεµµένοι εἰσίν.
Ask those guests, not being Greeks, from where they have been sent.
ἆρα µή τι κακὸν ὡς ἀγγελοῦσα, ὦ δέσποινα, εἰς τὴν ἀγορν τέτραψαι;
O lady, have you not gone into the marketplace to announce some evil?
ἕως τὴν ἀσπίδα ἐπώλουν ἐγώ, ὁ αὐτὸς κλὼψ πολλς δραχµς ἐκ τοῦ µατίου ἐµοῦ πως ἥρπαζεν.

οἱ µὲν ἠρώτων µε, Ἆρ’ ἐστί τις ἐλπίς σοι; οἱ δέ, Πῶς τὸν Θάνατον φεύξει;

καίπερ εὶ τετῑµηκότες τοὺς δεσπότᾱς, αὐτοὺς νῦν φοβούµεθα καὶ ἐρωτῶµεν εἴτε πόλεµον ποιήσουσιν εἴτ’ εἰρήνην.

ἀνοίξατε τοὺς ὀφθαλµούς, ὦ µαθηταί, καὶ ἀποκρνασθε τῷ
διδασκάλῳ.

οὐ µόνον τοῖς νέοις ἀλλὰ καὶ τοῖς παλαιοῖς ἤδη ἐστὶ πολὺς φόβος περὶ τούτου τοῦ πολέµου.

τινὲς µὲν τῶν ἐµῶν υἱῶν ἐθέλουσιν ὑπ’ ἐµοῦ ὠφεληθῆναι, τινὲς δ’ οὔ.

ἐκελεύσθης τούς τ’ ἀγαθοὺς καὶ τοὺς κακοὺς κρῖναι κατὰ τοὺς νόµους.
